Lake Level Information

Posted in: news by david on March 22, 2012 | No Comments

The USGS operates the hardware that take the real time lake level reading on Lake Cypress Springs.  They are experencing problems with the satellite uplink.  At this time we do not know how long the system is going to be down.  I will provide updates on the status as USGS provides them to me.  If it looks like the outage is going to be extended the District will start updating the lake level information manually once a day.

District Terminates Mild Drought Condition

Posted in: news by david on | No Comments

According to the Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan, as adopted by the Board of Directors of the Franklin County Water District in April 2001 and amended in May 2005 and July 2006, the District has reached a termination condition for a Mild Drought Condition.

Lake Cypress Springs, the District’s reservoir, has reached the elevation of at least 376 feet mean sea level (MSL).  The normal reservoir elevation is 378 feet MSL.  At the current elevation, the District terminates the existing Mild Drought Condition.

The lake elevation may be monitored on the District’s web site, www.fcwd.com.

The District does want to stress that continued conservation of water is important as we have no idea if the drought is actually over or if this is just a temporary reprieve. Please use water wisely.

The District suggests that all water users follow these conservation tips:

Conservation Tips

Indoor Use

·     When brushing your teeth, turn the water off until it is time to rinse.

·     Install a low-flow shower head that limits the flow from shower head to less than three gallons per minute.

·     Install faucet aerators to reduce water consumption.

·     When shaving, fill lavatory basin with hot water instead of letting water run continuously.

·     Use a moisture meter to determine when house plants need water.

Outdoor Use

·     Water only when needed. Look at the grass, feel the soil, or use a soil moisture meter to determine when to water.

·     Water lawns early in the morning during the hotter summer months. Otherwise, much of the water used on the lawn can simply evaporate between the sprinkler and the grass.

·     One and half inches of water applied once per week in the summer will keep most Texas grasses alive and healthy.

·     Do not water streets, walks or driveways.

·     Do not “sweep” walks and driveways with the water hose. Use a broom or rake instead.

Lake Cypress Springs Fireworks Show

Posted in: news by david on March 5, 2012 | No Comments

I first want to take a moment to express my personal and the District’s sympathy to the Boltz family over the loss of Rick.  Rick succumbed after a long and hard fought battle with cancer.  Rick was the founder of the fireworks show that has been at Lake Cypress Springs for many years. It is an event that we all look forward to.

Rick’s wife Sarah has advised me that the show will go on and is scheduled for 9:30 on Saturday, June 30, 2012, so mark your calendars.

The show is as always the primary fund raiser for the South Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.  Let’s all remember Rick and make an extra effort for the VFD.
